Window Entry and Security

Solving Issues with Problem Windows

An area which is often not considered by the general public is how a locksmith can solve window problems.

Whether it is to improve the window security, fix an issue with the mechanism or gain entry to a locked system… well at JD Locksmiths we offer help for all those issues. Plus, we now offer a glazing service!

A broken window handle can be a real problem, as it makes your home both insecure and can be uncomfortable to use.

Windows can be opened without damage and returned to full working order. Mechanisms can be fixed or replaced, and any new parts or fittings will be of the highest standard.

Also, often windows can be repaired, even when our customers think they need new windows, meaning the savings can be quite large.

Window Lock Repair, Security & Glazing

Window Problems We Fix

Here is a clear breakdown of the window issues we deal with regularly:

  • Broken Window Handles: A broken or loose handle is one of the most common window faults we see. Beyond the obvious inconvenience, a broken handle can leave a window impossible to close securely — making your home both draughty and vulnerable to entry. We carry replacement handles for the most common uPVC window profiles and can fit them quickly.
  • Failed Window Mechanisms: The espagnolette mechanism is the long locking strip that runs up the side of a uPVC window frame. When this fails, the window may appear to lock, but the bolts are not actually engaging — meaning the window looks closed but is not secure. This is a serious security risk that many homeowners do not notice until it is pointed out to them.
  • Window Lock Upgrades: Standard window locks vary enormously in quality. If your windows were fitted more than ten years ago, there is a good chance the locks no longer meet current insurance requirements. We can assess what you have and fit appropriate upgrades where needed.
  • Locked-Out Windows: Yes, it happens. Windows lock in the closed position with keys inside, mechanisms seize up, and child safety locks occasionally get stuck. We can open windows without damage in the majority of cases.
  • Glazing Repair: We offer a glazing repair service alongside our lock and mechanism work. If a window pane has cracked, fogged between the double-glazing layers, or been damaged during a break-in attempt, we can assess and address it during the same call.

Security Upgrades for Accessible Windows: Ground-floor windows and those accessible from flat roofs, extensions, or outbuildings are particular targets. We can advise on and fit additional security measures — such as window restrictors, secondary locks, and reinforced handles — to make these windows significantly harder to force.

Why Window Security Is More Important Than Most People Think

Why Window Security Is More Important Than Most People Think

According to UK burglary data, a significant proportion of break-ins involve entry through a window rather than a door. Ground-floor windows — particularly those at the side or rear of a property — are especially targeted because they are less visible from the street.

Over the years, during our attendance at break-ins across Lancashire and Yorkshire, we have seen first-hand how easily a poorly maintained or low-quality window lock can be defeated. In some cases, it takes seconds. A failed espagnolette, a worn handle, or a window that does not quite close flush gives an opportunistic intruder all the access they need.

The good news is that window security is relatively inexpensive to address. In most cases, a repair or upgrade costs far less than a homeowner expects — and far less than dealing with a break-in.

We Repair Before We Replace

One thing we hear regularly from customers is that they were told by another company that they needed all-new windows. In the majority of cases, we attend, and that is not true.

Mechanisms can be replaced. Handles can be swapped. Locks can be upgraded. The window frame itself is usually fine. We carry a comprehensive range of window parts, and we will always try to repair before suggesting a replacement. We will also always tell you honestly if a repair is not viable — but in our experience, that is the exception rather than the rule.

The savings can be significant. A new window can cost several hundred pounds. A mechanism replacement is a fraction of that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a locksmith really fix a window, or is that a glazier’s job?

It depends on the problem. If the issue is with the locking mechanism, handle, or security hardware, that is absolutely within a locksmith’s remit — and that is where we specialise. For broken glass, we also offer a glazing repair service. In many cases, we can handle both elements in a single visit, saving time and reducing the number of trades you need to deal with.

My window looks closed, but still feels insecure. What might be wrong?

This is often a sign that the espagnolette mechanism has failed. The window closes, but the locking bolts are not engaging properly. The window may also have dropped slightly in the frame over time, preventing a proper seal. Both of these are repairable in most cases. Call us, and we can come and take a look.

Do window locks need to meet a specific standard for home insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Most home insurance policies specify minimum requirements for window locks, particularly on ground-floor and accessible windows. Key-operated locks are often required. We can check whether your current windows comply during any visit.

Can you fit child safety restrictors to my windows?

Yes. Window restrictors limit how far a window can open, preventing young children from climbing through or falling out. They are a relatively inexpensive addition and can be fitted quickly. We can advise on the best options for your window type.

My window has misted up between the panes. Is that a security issue?

Misting between double-glazed panes indicates a failed seal. It is primarily an energy-efficiency and aesthetic issue rather than a direct security one, but a failed seal can also affect how well the window closes and locks. We can assess the extent of the problem and advise on repair options.

What areas do you cover for window repairs?
